Board approves financial statement

The Russellville Board of Education approved the financial statement for September 2006 in the regular board meeting held Oct. 26 at the Central office.
The school system's operational cost for Sept. 2006 is $276,476.00, but amount in the flexible funds account is $174,470.04 leaving a gap of $102,005.96. The overage amount will be covered by money from the board's general fund, Dr. Wayne Ray, superintendent, said.
This decrease is a result from the loss of $203,860.47 from the City during the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2006, and from overages in programs that are insufficiently funded. These programs include ARI, technology, Children's First, High Hopes and At-Risk, Ray said.
The school board should get some of the money spent on building projects after the insurance company reimburses them for damaged property, Ray said.
"We are in good financial shape," Dr. Ray said.
In other business, the board approved requests for the RHS Marching Hundred to attend the "All-star Music Festival" in Orlando, Fla. May 1-6, 2007. The band has attended this festival four times in the past 25 years, Ray said.
"This is an excellent learning opportunity for band members, and is very educational," Ray said.
The band will also compete in a parade and concert competition while in Orlando, according to information provided by the school board on the trip.
The board also approved the use of the middle school's gym for the North Alabama Sports Classic Magazine's 2nd Annual Who's Who in High School Football Banquet on Nov. 13. They also approved the use of both RHS and RMS gyms for the Quinn's Ranch Children's Home 6th Annual Old Timer's Basketball Tournament to be held March 7-9, 2007.
In remarks from the superintendent, Dr Ray recognized three choral students who were selected to perform on the All State Show Choir. Dr. Ray also discussed the improving health conditions of two staff members.
Dr. Ray also asked that everyone support Amendment 2, which will be on the ballot Nov. 7.
The meeting adjourned. The next Russellville School Board meeting will be Nov. 16 at 3:30 p.m. at the Central office.
