Russellville students make ‘prom promise'

By Staff

On Friday, juniors and seniors at Russellville High School kicked off prom day with a special breakfast in the RHS cafeteria.
While the gathering was a chance for students to share their excitement about the day's activities, it was also a time for them to be reminded of the importance of making wise choices about drugs and alcohol.
Students had the opportunity to sign a &#8220prom promise” obligating them to do their part for a safe, sober and drug-free America. Those who signed the promise became eligible for prize drawings that were part of the morning's activities.
The prizes, which included t-shirts and gift certificates, were donated by local businesses.
The breakfast was sponsored by Students Against Destructive Decisions and the RHS junior class.
Students also heard guest speaker Chad Oakley of the Ashley Darby Foundation give his personal story about the tragedy drugs can cause.
The &#8220prom promise” reads in part: &#8220I will make a difference. I refuse to be a statistic. I refuse to live with the guilt of making a wrong decision, and refuse to wait until it is too late. I will not only live my life in the present, but will also live a life with hopes for the future. I will not let alcohol and drugs determine the outcome of my life, or the life of an innocent victim.”
Friday night's prom was held at the RHS Middle School gym.
