Tiger tennis earns sectional win

The Red Bay High School boys tennis team opened the 2006 season in strong fashion on Tuesday, defeating sectional rival Mars Hill 6-3 at Veteran's Park in Florence.
Wesley Jarnigan led the way for the Tigers at No. 1 singles, defeating Mars Hill's Hunter Lumpkin 10-5. Red Bay's Matt Young won at No. 2 singles, beating Tirey Cole 10-3.
Anthony Horton earned another win for the Tigers, defeating Russell Durdunji 10-3 at No. 4 singles. Red Bay's Toby Gray won his match 10-5 over Mars Hill's Brandon Sherrod at No. 5 singles.
Jarnigan and Young teamed to defeat Lumpkin and Cole 10-7 at No. 1 doubles. Horton and Jeremy Johnson won for the Tigers at No. 2 doubles, edging Durdunji and Drake Davis 11-9.
Davis won his No. 3 singles match for Mars Hill, defeating Johnson 10-3. The Panthers' Thomas Hester also won at No. 6 singles, defeating John Thigpen 10-6.
Sherrod and Hester won a No. 3 doubles match for Mars Hill.
On the girls side, Mars Hill defeated Red Bay 9-0.
Haley Sargent won for the Lady Panthers at No. 1 singles, defeating Red Bay's Jodi Wilemon 10-2. Lauren Williams defeated Lydia Hammock 10-0 at No. 2 singles, and Lauren McClure edged Paige Palmer 10-7 at No. 3 singles.
Mars Hill's Nicole Williams defeated Red Bay's Natalie Green 10-0 at No. 4 singles, and Macy Murphy won her No. 5 singles match 10-0 over Barbara Gonzales.
Lyndsie McClure won at No. 6 singles for the Lady Panthers, defeating Britan Bolding 10-7.
Sargent and Lauren Williams teamed to win at No. 1 doubles, defeating Wilemon and Green 10-2. Lauren McClure and Nicole Williams edged Hammock and Palmer 11-10 at No. 2 doubles.
Murphy and McClure won for Mars Hill at No. 3 doubles.
This is coach Sonny Glasgow's 18th year as tennis coach at Red Bay. He has taken 13 teams to the state tournament over the course of his career.
Glasgow said returning to the state tournament this year will be the biggest challenge he has faced as only two players are back from last year's team.
