DHR praised for storm work

By Staff
Jonathan Willis FCT Staff Writer
As the southeast braced for Hurricane Ivan in mid-September, the Department of Human Resources worked to prepare for the storm, as well as the aftermath of the monstrous storm. In review of the event, DHR officials said this week the department did a great job during the relief effort.
Because of modern technology storm trackers were able to give a lengthy warning of the storm's power and path, allowing DHR employees across the state to coordinate shelter openings and staff the facilities around the clock.
The county department was well-prepared through previous natural disasters to work with national agencies during the relief effort.
Hundreds of workers throughout Alabama flocked to the Gulf Coast to help in the relief effort, including Franklin County resident Kathy Bryant.
The DHR also played a significant role in the United States Department of Agriculture's decision to help food stamp recipients in 24 of the state's hardest hit counties.
