Cotton Crop to Top Early Estimate Here
Franklin County's cotton crop is turning out better than expected-at least 1,876 bales better, according to the U.S. Bureau of the census.
A cotting ginning report issued this week by the bureau disclosed that 9,876 bales were ginned here from the 1954 crop prior to Nov. 1.
An estimate Oct. 14, based on a survey of ginning reports by county ginners, showed that a crop of only about 8,000 bales was expected.
Four Men to Leave for Armed Forces
Four men from Franklin County will go into the armed forces in December, says Mrs. Gladys Bobo, secretary of the local selective service board.
These men are Rayan Trapp, Phil Campbell, route two; Hollis Hugh Gaston, Russellville, route four, draftees; Jack Johnson, Vina, route two, and Junior McCarley, Atwood, volunteers. All four will report to Montgomery.
Also scheduled for December is a pre-induction call for 30 men. This will be on Dec. 16, Mrs. Bobo says.
Yule Lighting Contest to Be Held This Year
The Garden Club in connection with the Chamber of Commerce and other civic clubs of Red Bay will sponsor a Christmas lighting contest this year.
Three cash prizes are to be given: The best overall display, the best decorated picture window, and the best door.
Lights are to be burning on Dec. 20-Dec. 25.
Community Chest Drive is Underway in County
Franklin County will have a Community Chest after all!
The Community Chest was launched Monday night with an enthusiastic meeting in conjunction with the Lions Club at the Iron Gate.
The Lions agreed to work to put "over the top" Franklin County's quota of $9,000.
