Several area cross country teams are preparing to participate in the State cross country meets on Saturday.
Area teams such as Carthage, West Lauderdale, Meridian High School, Quitman and Northeast Lauderdale will make the trip to Clinton to participate in their respective meets.
The first meet starts at 10:30 with the 5A girls run followed by the 5A boys.
Tupelo swept the two meets last year to pick up state championships.
The 4A girls and boys will follow the 5A meets starting at 10:30 a.m.
Last year, Pearl High School swept the 4A state championships. Pontotoc, Satillo and Oxford also have powerful squads and should challenge for the state championship this year.
Northeast Lauderdale will compete in the meet after winning district, and coach James Matthews said his teams should do very well this weekend.
The Lady Trojans have a solid top seven runners that will compete on Saturday.
Yolanda Truman, Whitney Ward, Carleshia Barfield, Jill Pitts, Bianca McDonald, Brittney Bostic and Shalonda Truman will all run for the Lady Trojans and try to put the team in the top five this year.
For the Trojans, Antonio Serton leads the team along with Owen Lide, Brach Barham, Stanton Wallace, Henrick Jefferson and Matthew Snyder.
The boys squad finished 12th last year and is looking to move up the list this year.
According to Matthews, his squads are anxious to compete in the big meet.
The 3A girls meet is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. with the boys 3A meet to follow. Corinth swept the two meets last year in 3A.
St. Andrew's will try to defend its state titles in 2A girls and boys competition. The 2A girls meet begins at 1:30 p.m. with the boys meet starting around 1:55 p.m.
The 1A girls meet starts at 2:30 p.m. with the boys meet to follow. The Myrtle girls won last year's meet and the Resurrection High School won the boys meet.
