Joey Rushing accepted the congratulations of his supporters Tuesday night as final election results were posted.
He said he was "shocked" at the wide margin by which he was elected as Franklin County's new District Attorney.
Rushing received 7,409 votes in the race, or 62 percent of the votes cast, and his opponent Lee Osborn received 4,533, or roughly 38 percent.
The race marked the first time either of the two candidates had sought elected office. Osborn was appointed as D.A. in the spring.
In the two contested County Commission races, both Democratic candidates won easily. In District 4, Norris Lewey defeated Jerry Fancher 7,145, or 62 percent, to 4,448 votes, or 38 percent. In District 2, incumbent Gene Graham defeated challenger Lowell Moore 6,553, or 56 percent, to 5,117, or 44 percent.
Provisional ballots remained to be counted at press time, but they were not expected to change any election results. In all, more than 12,000 votes were cast in Franklin County. President George Bush received 62 percent of the county's vote. National results were not complete at press time.
Please see Friday's FCT for more coverage of Tuesday's elections.
