Mississippi prep football playoffs
open on Friday

Eleven area football teams from Mississippi will begin their playoffs Friday night.
Of the 11, six are from Class 2A schools. They are Philadelphia, Clarkdale, Newton, Lake, Heidelberg, and Enterprise.
Also in playoff action Friday are Newton County and West Lauderdale in Class 3A, Wayne County in Class 4A, Wayne Academy in MPSA Class A, and Leake Academy in MPSA Class AA.
Meridian in Class 5A, Union in Class 1A, and Lamar in the MPSA AAA will wait until next week for their playoff games.
Division 5-2A champion Philadelphia hosts Madison St. Joseph at Harpole Stadium. Philadelphia improved to 9-1 with a 40-14 rout of Kemper County last week. The Bruins fell to 5-5 with a 34-7 loss to St. Andrew's.
Division 5-2A runner-up Clarkdale will host the War Dawgs of Hinds AHS. Clarkdale improved to 4-5 with a rally from a 27-13 halftime deficit to defeat Newton 34-27 last week. Hinds AHS, based in Utica, improved to 7-3 with a 48-12 blowout of Wesson.
Newton, which finished third in 5-2A, will go to McLaurin. The Tigers fell to 3-7 with their loss to Clarkdale. McLaurin's Tigers come in with a 9-1 mark after beating Loyd Star 38-0.
Lake, the No. 4 team in 5-2A, goes to Ridgeland to take on undefeated St. Andrew's at Roger Stribling Field. The Hornets upped their record to 2-8 as they sewed up a playoff berth with a 46-8 rout of Williams-Sullivan. St. Andrew's (10-0) easily handled St. Joseph to remain unbeaten.
Also in Class 2A, Heidelberg, the No. 3 team in Division 7-2A, travels to New Augusta to face Perry Central. The Oilers fell to 6-4 with a 14-0 loss to Taylorsville. Perry Central improved to 9-1 with a 35-27 win over Gulfport St. John.
Enterprise, the No. 4 team in 7-2A, travels to Lumberton. The Bulldogs fell to 5-5 with a 60-6 thrashing from Seminary last week. Lumberton improved to 9-1 with a 47-7 rout of Biloxi Mercy Cross. The Panthers' only setback was a 29-28 loss to Seminary.
In Class 3A, Newton County hosts Collins as the two meet for the fourth time in six years. The Cougars improved to 6-3 with a 37-14 win over Choctaw Central. Collins improved to 8-2 with a 54-8 annihilation of Columbia.
West Lauderdale travels to Prentiss. The Knights improved to 7-3 with a 34-14 win at Carthage, while Prentiss improved to 8-2 with a 43-21 win over Raleigh. Prentiss put up 33 points in the second quarter.
In Class 4A, unbeaten Wayne County begins its run for a third-straight state title when the War Eagles host Lawrence County of Monticello. Wayne improved to 10-0 with a 34-6 win over Northeast Jones. Lawrence County dropped to 5-5 with a 40-0 loss to Brookhaven.
In the MPSA Class A, Wayne Academy hosts River Oaks School of Monroe, La. The Jaguars improved to 9-2 with last week's 28-12 playoff win over Glenbrook Academy of Minden, La. The Mustangs of River Oaks whipped Prentiss Christian 42-0 to improve to 9-2. Wayne defeated Prentiss Christian 35-6 the previous week.
In Class AA, Leake Academy travels to Batesville to take on North Delta. The Rebels from Madden improved to 7-2 with last week's 29-6 win over East Rankin Academy. North Delta remained perfect at 11-0.
with a 47-7 win over Marshall Academy. The Green Wave has scored 35 or more points in nine of their 11 games.
