Miller, Barrett, Cross inducted into EMCC Hall

SCOOBA Joe Miller will never forget his days as a student-athlete at East Mississippi Community College. Now, neither will anyone else.
Miller was one of 10 former Lions standouts inducted as the fourth class to enter the East Mississippi Community College Sports Hall of Fame earlier this month. The group was honored at EMCC's homecoming weekend on Oct. 16.
Miller is best known to most area sports fans as the head girls' basketball coach at Southeast Lauderdale High School, but in 1964, it was his football prowess that earned him a scholarship at East Mississippi. He soon gave football up, though, and opted instead to play baseball and basketball.
It was a decision that brought him his most treasured memory as a junior college athlete.
Memories like that were what spurred East Mississippi to found its Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
Two other local sports stars from years gone by Jackie Barrett, an EMJC basketball standout from 1950-1952, and Billy Joe Cross, a Meridian High product and two-sport athlete at Scooba were inducted along with Miller. Kline Shepherd, Elmer Higginbotham, Johnny Fisher, William "Bubba" Davis, Hubbard Maroney, Claude "Pat" Knight and Charlie Box rounded out the group of honorees.
The EMCC Sports Hall of Fame now consists of 61 members who make up the group's electorate. Though the 2004 class contained 10 members and the inaugural class had 20 honorees, Clark said just five former athletes will be honored each year beginning in 2005.
East Mississippi alumni, students and fans can nominate former Lions athletes and coaches. Eligible players must be 10 years removed from their EMCC career, and coaches must be gone for five years to be considered.
The school is currently accepting nominations, the form for which can be found on EMCC's Web site. The deadline for consideration in the Class of 2005 is May 1.
