Catherine Griffin wasn't home when firefighters spent the early morning hours on Sunday fighting a blaze that heavily damaged her 1411 Eighth St. house.
The fire, called into E-911 dispatchers just before midnight late Saturday, is one of two blazes firefighters extinguished Sunday that remain under investigation. The other fire was at a house on 17th Avenue.
Griffin's house received extensive damage, according to Battalion Chief Howard Gibson of the Meridian Fire Department. Firefighters were on the scene until about 1 a.m. Sunday.
Reede, who works in the classified advertising department at The Meridian Star, is trying to help her mother, who has a limited income, find a place to live.
Reede said she is looking for a twin-size bed for her mother to use at her house, and also a couch, and a washer and dryer for when she is able to relocate.
In the other blaze, firefighters responded at about 2 p.m. to a house fire on 17th Avenue. No one was home. The house received significant damage and a house next door received some outside damage.
Fire department officials would not release the name of the homeowner because the blaze remains under investigation. Officials also didn't have a specific street address for the fire.
Firefighters remained on the scene of the fire until about 3 p.m.
