Meridian-Starkville contest highlights Week 2 showdowns

It won't be hard to find an interesting high school football game to watch on Friday night.
Ray Stadium should be rocking as preseason No. 4 ranked Meridian High School plays host to preseason No. 6 Starkville. Both teams are coming off wins, with the Wildcats having thumped Clinton 41-14 and Starkville earning a tough 14-7 win over Louisville.
Other interesting games in the area have Clarkdale visiting Enterprise, Northeast Lauderdale hosting Southeast Lauderdale, West Lauderdale entertaining Philadelphia and Lamar hosting Jackson Prep.
The storyline of the Clarkdale-Enterprise game is an easy one to figure out. Clarkdale head coach Jud Gartman returns to L.J. Davis field where he coached the Enterprise Bulldogs from 1980-2002, leading EHS to three state championships.
Clarkdale opened the season with a 55-20 loss to West Lauderdale on Thursday, while Enterprise fell to Southeast Lauderdale 27-20 on Friday. Both teams go into the game at 0-1, but the records really aren't what everybody will be talking about this week in Clarke County.
Surprising Southeast Lauderdale will be looking to move its record to 1-0 when it hits the road to face Northeast Lauderdale, but the Trojans played 5A foe Northwest Rankin tough last week before stumbling in the last quarter.
The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and should provide a lot of fireworks.
Lamar looks to take its first ever win over MPSA juggernaut Jackson Prep at 7 p.m. when the Raiders play host to the Patriots at Grey Cobb Field.
Lamar is 1-0 after opening with a 30-20 win over Heritage on Friday night.
Friday's showdown at West Lauderdale between the homestanding Knights and the Tornadoes of Philadelphia could feature a pair of teams who could go deep into the playoffs.
They certainly can score some points.
Class 2A Philadelphia beat Choctaw Central 40-0 on Friday night, while Class 3A WL scored 55 in its opener against Clarkdale.
