Wayne County opens with win

WAYNESBORO It took three hours to play the game, but in the end Wayne County prevailed over Columbus 31-17 before a sparse crowd of 4,000 Friday night.
Wayne County head coach Marcus Boyles summed up his feeling of the game in one word, "Sloppy."
Wayne County used the passing of quarterback Drexler Johnson. The sophomore signal caller passed for 217 yards on the night, completing 12-of-18 attempts.
Johnson broke open a tie ballgame with 2:34 to play in the third quarter when he hit wide receiver Randall Lofton for 75 yards and a score to put WC up 17-10.
Eleven seconds later, War Eagle defensive back Jermaine McGrew scooped up a Falcon fumble and rambled 38 yards for a TD that put WC up 24-10 with 2:23 to
play in the third period.
Columbus gained 64 yards on 39 rushes but passed for 124 yards in the loss.
The War Eagles scored early in the game. Kennard Arrington returned a punt 51 yards for the first TD of the year for either team. Brandon Sellers added his first of four kick conversions.
Columbus tied the score at the 8:13-mark of the second quarter. The Falcons drove 60 yards to score on a 41-yard pass from Tyson Lee to Timothy Bush.
WC went up 10-7 a the half on a 32-yard field goal by Sellers.
Columbus tied the score at 10 when Porter hit a 20-yard field goal, but Wayne County's Arthur Everett scored the home team's final points of the night when he ran two yards with 8:54 to play.
Columbus scored the final points of the night when Lee hit Bush with a 30-yard scoring strike.
Wayne will travel to Madison Central next week.
