Cheri R. Wilson didn't know it was going to happen or that it was even a possibility.
The departing Meridian Community College women's soccer team striker was named one of six Coca-Cola Community All-Americans for the 2003-04 junior college/community college school year.
The Coca-Cola Company donated $5,000 to Hope Village in Wilson's name.
Wilson and the five other recipients of the award were honored at the NACDA's 39th annual convention at the Wyndham Anatole Hotel in Dallas. The recipients were recognized via a video presentation.
Wilson was one of two MCC student-athletes nominated for the award, which recognizes an individual's work in his or her sport, in the classroom and in the community. MCC golfer Matthew Shoemaker was also nominated by the school.
Wilson, who will attend the University of Southern Mississippi in the fall, helped at Hope Village by sorting through clothing at the foundation's thrift store.
Wilson played striker for the Lady Eagles, helping the team to an 8-10 record this past season.
MCC head soccer coach Alex George said Wilson is very deserving of the honor from Coca-Cola, and that she handled her duties to the team, in the classroom and her volunteer work very well.
