Baseball down the drain

An additional inch of rain Friday night eventually led to the canceling of the 2004 State Games baseball tournament.
The decision to scrap the remainder of the tournament was made around 10 a.m. Saturday.
Despite having the infield tarped, water was standing at home plate at Meridian Community College's Scaggs Field as well as an area approximately 10 yards wide between first and second base. The outfield was already soggy prior to the late night rain on Friday.
In all, six of a possible 15 games were played.
District Seven 12
District Three 0
District 7 needed only four innings to drub District 3 in Friday night's late elimination contest.
District 7 scored five runs in the top of the first inning and added four more in the second and three in the fourth.
Justin Hays of McComb had a two-run single in the first inning, while David Trisler of Adams County Christian School, Justin Whatley of Loyd Star, and Jake Russell of Lawrence County had RBI singles in the second. Dustin Case of ACCS had a two-run double in the fourth.
Jeremy Davis of Natchez Cathedral also had a two-bagger for District 7. Hays went 3-for-3 with three singles, while Whatley had two singles.
Corey Walker of Cathedral was the winning pitcher.
Ben Turner of Washington School had a pair of singles to account for District 3's only two hits. Jesse Spinks of Lee Academy took the loss.
