Meridian High to start quarterback club

The Meridian High School football team is starting a Wildcats quarterback club.
The new booster club will hold its first meeting from noon-1 p.m. at Barnhill's Country Buffet on Aug. 23. The Wildcats will open the football season on the road against Clinton at 7 p.m. on Aug. 27.
Meridian High head football coach Ed Stanley will attend every quarterback club meeting to discuss the team and the 2004 season, along with selected assistant coaches and players every Monday throughout the season.
Information on the quarterback club will be available at "Meet the Wildcats" night at Ray Stadium tonight. Those interested can also contact Stanley at 601-485-8675.

Saturday's scheduled slow-pitch softball game between Northeast Lauderdale and Southeast Lauderdale has been canceled.
NEL was scheduled to play at Southeast at 5 p.m. Northeast coach Chris Harper said SEL had too many games on the schedule and needed to drop one.
Southeast pays a visit to Northeast on Oct. 5.
The SEL Lady Tigers are still scheduled to play at Quitman at noon on Saturday.

The Enterprise High School sports programs has received a prestigious honor which will be presented on Aug. 20 at the "Meet the Bulldogs" night.
The Mississippi High School Activities Association has chosen Enterprise to receive a District 5 sportsmanship award in recognition of the way the schools athletic teams and supporters conducted themselves during the 2003-2004 sports season.

Meridian High's slow-pitch softball team is still getting used to the new softball that is being used this year.
The change in game ball has been most evident in the outfield, where fielders are finding the ball does not carry as far as it used too.

The Panthers of Quitman High School have been out in pads this week, and so far, head coach Jimmy Don Holloman is pleased with what he has seen.
Quitman opens its season Aug. 27 at Heidelberg High School.

Former Ethel coach Nathan Corey Wright has been named head football coach at French Camp Academy. He coached football and boys track at Ethel.
Prior to his stint at Ethel, Wright coached baseball and football one year at Winona.

The Enterprise High School football team has focused on offense and special teams during their first two weeks of practice.
Speed said the Bulldogs are going to rely on the veteran offensive line to lead the way in the first part of the season. That includes Jonathan Owens at center, Tim Dearman and Adam Shirley at the guards and tackles Justin Gray, Justin Miller and Blaine Harms. Those playing on the defensive line include Michael Dow, Justin Mars, Bo Thilyan and Adam Shirley.

Kemper Academy has gotten its third season of fast-pitcher softball underway.
The Lady Rams are currently 4-4 and have picked up a big division win over Sylva-Bay.
KA was unable to play against Wayne Academy on Tuesday because of the rain but will be back in action against Heidelberg Academy on Monday. The Lady Rams will travel to Heidelberg to take on the Lady Rebels in a district contest.
