Excellence in education

Leanna Hope McLaughlin and Benny Read Owens, both of Meridian, were named two of the country's most outstanding campus leaders by Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.
They were nominated by Meridian Community College.
The honor is awarded to students who display outstanding achievements in scholarly endeavors and who participate and exercise leadership in extracurricular activities.
Over the past 38 years, Who's Who has honored and rewarded individual scholastic excellence of outstanding campus leaders. This prestigious award is one of the greatest honors annually conferred by the American academic community.
Owens is the son of Don and Cathy Owens. McLaughlin is the daughter of Dr. James McLaughlin and Rose McLaughlin.
Hinds Community College in Raymond recently announced members of the president's and dean's list from Lauderdale County. The students are Daniel Johnson, James Brown and Claire Webster, all of Meridian; and Daphnie Jones, Lauderdale.
Hunter Heath of the Northeast Lauderdale chapter of Future Farmers of America recently received first place in the Mississippi FFA Junior Prepared Public Speaking Contest.
After placing first in the federation and district prepared public speaking competitions, Heath represented the Central Mississippi District and his chapter in the state competition in Hattiesburg.
Contestants were required to speak on agriculture-related topics and present a four- minute speech before a panel of judges.
Brandy Cramblitt of Meridian has been elected to membership in Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing as an undergraduate student through Gamma Lambda chapter at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.
More than 300,000 nurse scholars have been inducted into Sigma Theta Tau. With 115,000 active members, it is the second-largest and one of the most prestigious nursing organizations in the world.
The society's members are active in more than 85 countries and territories, and the 423 chapter honor societies are located on more than 520 college and university campuses in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Pakistan, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States.
