Tami Keeter, an alternative school teacher for grades 3-5 at Harris Upper Elementary School, was recently chosen as one of the top 10 teachers in the Mississippi/Alabama Region by Clear Channel Radio.
Each week during the 2003-2004 school year, teachers were nominated to Clear Channel Radio, locally WJDQ-Q101, by radio listeners in the region. Keeter was selected as "Teacher of the Week" during the first semester of the school year.
At the end of the school year, essays titled "Education in Action" were reviewed by judges. The weekly winners, more than 40 in all, were anonymously reviewed by a panel of judges for Clear Channel Radio. The team then narrowed the field to 10 finalists.
Keeter's nomination letter came from a local listener whose life she had changed through her influence as a teacher. A banquet in the finalists' honor was held at Howard Johnson's Hotel Convention Center.
Each of the finalists received a recognition plaque.
Keeter has been a teacher since 1988. She received a master's degree in school counseling from Mississippi State University.
Keeter is a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church. She is a water safety instructor for the American Red Cross, and a staff coordinator for classroom management for Meridian Public Schools. Progress Street, the alternative program for elementary students, will be housed at Harris Upper-Elementary School during the upcoming school year.
