It takes a little skill and a little luck to win close games and North Meridian Optimist had both ingredients in its corner in the ASA 10-under slow-pitch softball state tournament at Sammie Davidson Complex Saturday.
NMO went 4-0 to reach the championship game against Lawrence County with three of the wins coming by a single run. The finals were not completed by press deadline.
NMO opened the day with a 4-3 win over Grenada Xtreme. After a 15-0 rout of the Purvis Lady Naders, NMO nipped Picayune 8-7 and Lawrence County 11-10.
The Diamond Girls from Newton County had previously won the NSA and USSSA state tournaments. They placed fourth Saturday.
Picayune came in third with NMO and Lawrence County battling for the title.
NMO managed to come out on top in each of the one-run contests.
Lawrence County won its first three games of the day, beating Noxubee/Kemper 19-7, Forest 12-2, and the Newton County Diamond Girls 9-4 before losing to NMO 11-10. Lawrence County blanked Picayune 8-0 to reach the title game.
The Newton County Diamond Girls finished fourth, beating the Columbia All-Stars 14-3 and the Brookhaven Exterminators 15-2 before losing 9-4 to Lawrence County. The Diamond Girls came back to beat the Columbus Crushers 10-2 before being eliminated with a 7-6 loss to Picayune.
