Like ripples in a pond

By Staff
July 7, 2004
The Meridian Star launches a four-day series today focusing on the tragic shootings at Lockheed-Martin's local plant a year ago. The series will explore what happened and how the actions of a single disturbed person reverberate through the community, like ripples caused by tossing a rock in a pond.
Lockheed Martin employee Doug Williams' shooting spree affected not only the people he killed and their families. As the series unfolds, you will see that it has forced some local businesses to take new steps to protect their employees from the horrible potential of workplace violence. In many ways, the community at large has been forced to look more closely at the things that drive our relations with each other, and how we feel each other's pain.
All of us have a stake in the aftermath; all of us have a stake in doing what we can as individuals and as members of this community to help make sure no such tragedy occurs again.
The July 8, 2003 shootings at Lockheed Martin show in stark reality that a single act by a single person carries the capacity to substantially change a community. And as the ripples from this pond lap at your own doorstep, you should ask yourself, "What am I doing to make it better."
