District 5 takes first round win

By By Marty Stamper/EMG sports assistant
    June 26, 2004
Parker Temple of West Lauderdale provided the bulk of the offense while Wade Weathers of Enterprise and Kyle Boswell of Clarkdale took care of the pitching as District 5 posted a 4-2 win over District 3 in the first round of the State Games baseball tournament Friday at Meridian Community College's Scaggs Field.
Temple had an RBI single in the first inning, a double in the third, and padded a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer in the fifth.
Weathers got the win, allowing one run and two hits in four innings. He struck out nine and walked one. Boswell tossed the final three frames, allowing one run on one hit. He fanned one and did not allow a walk to earn a save.
In addition to Temple's three hits, District 5 also got a single each from Cory Chance and Michael McWilliams.
District 3 had three hits with John Randle Wells of Pillow Academy, Anthony Palasini of Indianola Academy, and Ben Turner of Washington School each getting a single.
Dwayne Davis of Greenwood took the loss.
    District Six 10
    District Two 0
District 6 scored three runs in the first inning and added five more in the sixth to take the six-inning run-rule win in the day's opener.
Justin Reed and Derek Camper, both from Jackson Callaway, had two singles and two RBIs apiece for District 6. Corey Stevens of Clinton had a single and a sacrifice fly to drive in two runs. Patrick Brawner of Jackson Academy had an RBI triple and Cullan Knight of Simpson Academy had an RBI double. Kyle Fairly of Manchester Academy also had a two-bagger.
Wade Broyles of Madison Central struck out eight and allowed only two hits and two walks in four innings to get the win.
Cade Haggard of Oxford doubled for one of District 2's two hits. Wes Grillette of Oxford took the loss.
    District One 9
    District Eight 6
District 1 used five walks to score five runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 9-2 lead in beating District 8 in game that went just six innings due to the two-hour time limit.
Charlie Williams of Saltillo threw four innings to get the win. He aided his cause with a pair of singles.
District 1 also got a pair of RBI singles from Brian Dozer of Itawamba AHS, an RBI double from Tupelo's Matt Anderson, and a double each from Tupelo's Ben Baxter and Luke Atkins of Nettleton. Baxter had two RBIs.
Hoyt Hughes of Picayune had a two-run single for District 8. Paul Gatchell of Pascagoula and Joel Jackson of Hattiesburg both had a double, while Glendal Madden of d'Iberville had an RBI single.
Heath Stevens of Picayune took the loss.
District 8 used four walks and a hit batsman to tally four times in the bottom of the sixth. District 8 left the bases loaded to end the game.
    District Four 13
    District Seven 7
District 4 struck for seven runs in the bottom of the third inning in rallying from a 3-0 deficit for the win.
In the big inning, District 4 got doubles from Ackerman's Ryan Miller, Louisville's Josh Black, and Kosciusko's Scott McCrory, and an RBI triple from Austin Taylor of Kosciusko.
Miller and Black both finished with a single and a double. McCrory had a pair of RBIs, while Landon Gilmer of Philadelphia added a solo homer. Matt Millanig of Heritage Academy and Jared Boler of Philadelphia both had a pair of singles.
Louisville's Cody Kelley got the win.
David Trisler of Adams County Christian School had an RBI single and a solo homer for District 7. Jeremy Wallace of Parklane Academy took the loss.
    District Eight 7
    District Two 4
District 8 scored three runs in the third inning, added four more in the fourth, and overcame a lengthy rain delay to win Friday night's elimination game.
District 8 scored three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Jermaine Jackson of Hattiesburg had an RBI single, while Heath Stevens of Picayune had an RBI triple.
Cade Haggard of Oxford pulled District 2 to within 3-2 with an RBI double in the third. Haggard also had a pair of singles in the loss.
District 8 got that run back on an RBI single by Picayune's Alex Riser in the top of the fourth before a rain delay halted play for 85 minutes.
When play resumed, District got an RBI single from Jamiah Holder of Lumberton and a misplay on Adam McQueen's fly ball to right field to take a 7-2 lead.
Hoyt Hughes of Picayune and Jeremy Greene of Purvis both had a double for District 8.
Glendal Madden got the win in relief.
Chad Cregar had a two-run double for District 2 in the bottom of the fifth to cut the gap to 7-4. District 2 left the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth as the time limit ran out.
