Red, white and blue decorations and elected officials filled the lobby of the Raymond P. Davis Courthouse Annex on Tuesday to bid farewell to a longtime Lauderdale County employee.
Rex Hiatt, who has been Lauderdale County's administrator for 22 years, will retire June 30. He was joined at the gathering by county employees, as well as other friends and family members.
Each county supervisor thanked Hiatt for his service during his final board meeting on Monday. The supervisors also presented him with a plaque in appreciation of his service.
Well-wishers at Tuesday's reception included Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie.
Lauderdale County Circuit Clerk Donna Jill Johnson also complimented Hiatt's help during budget time.
Betty Cole, receptionist for the board of supervisors, said Hiatt always observed special occasions by taking his staff members to lunch or getting them little gifts.
Employees who work closely with Hiatt gave him a Palm Pilot as a gift. Local elected officials presented him with a pocket watch.
Hiatt will be replaced by Tony Green, who was hired by the board of supervisors as the new county administrator last month.
Green, who was with the state auditor's office for 20 years, worked closely with Hiatt during that time performing and overseeing Lauderdale County's audits.
