The team of Steve Hampton and Andy Mayatt were nearly as hot as Saturday's temperatures in the first round of the Boy Scouts Benefit Golf Tournament at Briarwood Country Club.
Their 14-under-par 58 gave them a four-stroke lead heading into today's second-round action.
Hampton and Mayatt found the morning round to their liking as they had 10 birdies and two eagles. Both eagles came on par-5s, Nos. 4 and 8. They also birdied Nos. 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 15, 17 and 18.
In second place is the team of Kelly Swain and Earl Aycock at 62. They had eight birdies Nos. 3, 4, 7, 8, 12, 15, 17 and 18 and an eagle on the par-4 10th hole.
Four teams enter today's final round tied at 63. In that group are the duos of Dan Sollie and Robbie Garrett, Willie Frazier and Mike Easterwood, Scotty Elliot and Daniel Boles, and Randy Warden and his partner.
Sollie and Garrett had an eagle on No. 4 to go with birdies on Nos. 8, 12, 13, 15, 17 and 18.
