Lauderdale County supervisors certainly seem to have hired an experienced man in Tony Green, the 43-year-old Jasper County native and veteran of the state auditor's office who takes over next month as the new county administrator. Green will replace Rex Hiatt, who has held the position for 22 years and retires June 30.
After his graduation from Mississippi State University, Green spent more than a decade working for the state auditor and his first assigned audit was in Lauderdale County. He said the other day he feels that his entire career has been associated and affiliated with Lauderdale County.
So, he certainly should know the ropes.
Green will earn an annual salary of $67,500. Hiatt, who has been county administrator for 22 years, earns $82,990 a year.
When he was introduced on Monday, Green said part of the move to Meridian involved a new challenge and new opportunity for himself and his family, which includes his wife, Jennifer, and two sons. Not much about county government is simple these days, but with a head start on the local management issues, Green should catch on very quickly.
