Excellence in education

Courtney Darnell Hatcher of Collinsville recently graduated summa cum laude from Mississippi State UniversityMeridian Campus with a 4.0 grade point average. She also was selected as the Outstanding Graduate in the field of Education from the 2004 graduating class.
She is married to Andy Hatcher, a deputy with Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department. She is the daughter of Malcolm and Bunny Darnell of Collinsville.
East Central Community College in Decatur recently observed its annual Awards Day ceremonies where six students were named to the college's Hall of Fame, the highest honor presented at the two-year institution.
To be considered for this honor, students must demonstrate exemplary character, superior scholarship, worthy leadership and contribute to the betterment of East Central Community College.
The Hall of Fame inductees are Ashley Buckman of Bay Springs; Jennifer Carson of Decatur; Jenna Talbert of Newton; and Adam McAdory, Audra Myers and Amy Warner, all of Louisville.
A business administration major, Buckman is a graduate of Heidelberg Academy and is the daughter of Kathy and Chris Elliott and Dewayne and Anna Buckman, all of Bay Springs.
Carson is a vocal musical education major and a graduate of Newton County High School. She is the daughter of Thomas and Brenda Carson of Decatur.
A music education major, McAdory is a graduate of Louisville High School and is the son of Margie Thompson and John McAdory, both of Louisville.
Myers is a pre-nursing major and is a graduate of Louisville High School. She is the daughter of John and Bonnie Myers of Louisville.
Talbert serves as president of Phi Theta Kappa, editor of The Tom Tom, and co-captain of the Scholar's Bowl team.
Warner is an elementary education major and graduate of Winston Academy. She is the daughter of Jack and Pat Warner of Louisville.
Photographs of these students will hang in the Hall of Fame collection in the lobby of Huff Auditorium.
The Yates Companies Inc., headquartered in Philadelphia, has awarded 20 $4,000 Yates Companies Scholarships to graduating seniors for their first two years of college. The 20 students were selected by a scholarship committee at Yates based upon academics, extra-curricular activities, two short essays and a letter of recommendation.
Among the 20 students to receive scholarships from the Meridian area are: Lashawn Terrell Houston of Collinsville; and Benjamin Charles Stokes of Preston.
