Excellence in Education

Phyllis Scott of Meridian has been selected to receive the first Royalty Education Endowment Scholarship.
Members of the Rex Club and the Queens Club established this endowment through the Meridian Community College Foundation. The members of these organizations are people who have been honored by the Junior Auxiliary for outstanding service to the community.
Scott, 19, is a graduating sophomore in the University Transfer Program. She was valedictorian of the 2002 class at Clarkdale High School. A dean's list scholar, she is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year college students.
She was selected for the Mississippi All-Academic First Team and was named to Who's Who Among Students in American Community and Junior Colleges. Scott was recognized recently as an H.M. Ivy Award recipient at MCC. She plans to pursue a master's degree in secondary education with an emphasis in mathematics.
Dustin James Colson has been selected to receive the Community Bank Veterans Scholarship at Meridian Community College.
This $1,000 award is funded through the MCC Foundation. Chuck Nicholson, president of Community Bank of Meridian, initiated this scholarship to honor a member of the armed forces who served in a combat area.
Colson is a 1999 graduate of Northeast Lauderdale High School. He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps for 41⁄2 years. His last five months were spent in Iraq. His infantry division was responsible for securing the city of Basra, seizing the Port of Umm Qasr, and securing the city of Al Basrah.
He is in the University Transfer Program and plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in a sports-related field. He would like to become an athletic trainer.
Drew Stribling and Kyle Allan Naylor have been selected to receive the Charles and Jean Winright Scholarships at Meridian Community College. These $1,000 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation through an endowment established in 1999 by a bequest from the estate of Mrs. Winright.
Stribling is a 2002 graduate of Northeast Lauderdale High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. At MCC, he is a sophomore in the University Transfer Program. He plans to pursue a career in engineering. In addition to maintaining a 3.75 grade point average, he works two jobs and takes care of an elderly friend's yard.
Naylor is a 2003 high honors graduate of West Lauderdale High School. He played varsity tennis and basketball and served as president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is a freshman in the University Transfer Program with an emphasis in business. A dean's list scholar, he is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year college students. He plays tennis for the MCC Eagles.
