Joseph VanDeWalker is the recipient of the Joe Carson Memorial Scholarship at Meridian Community College. This $600 award is funded through the MCC Foundation.
Carson worked at MCC for 19 years beginning in 1941, and he later was assistant superintendent of Meridian Schools under L.O. Todd. He served the Meridian community in numerous civic activities and organizations, holding leadership positions in most of them.
VanDeWalker is a 2002 graduate of Quitman High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society.
A sophomore in the University Transfer Program, he is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the internationals honor society for two-year college students.
He plans to continue his education in physical therapy or athletic training.
Anna Elizabeth Hall and Kenneth Ryan Livingston have been selected to receive the Sara and Sam Niemetz Math Scholarships at Meridian Community College.
These awards are funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established by Mrs. Niemetz in 1990. An additional contribution came in the form of a bequest from the estate of Mrs. Niemetz.
They are remembered as active members of Temple Beth Israel and the owners of The Vogue ladies apparel shop.
Hall is a 2003 graduate of Northeast Lauderdale High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society and Students Against Destructive Decisions.
Hall is a member of her church choir and serves as the secretary for the choir and the financial secretary for the church. At MCC, she is in the University Transfer Program. She plans to become a certified public accountant.
Livingston is a 2002 highest honors graduate of West Lauderdale High School. He was a member of the National Honor Society and was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students.
A dean's list scholar, Livingston is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year college students. He plans to become a certified public accountant.
Amy Sullivan Goforth of Meridian has been awarded a Community College Scholarship to attend the University of West Alabama. The award is based on academic achievement and proven leadership potential.
Goforth, a student at Meridian Community College, will enter UWA this fall and plans to pursue a career in medicine.
Jennifer Edwards of Meridian recently won an award for her work in the Student Art exhibit currently showing in the Wright Art Center Gallery on the Delta State University campus.
