Local officials estimate that tourists and visitors brought about $110.6 million in revenue to Lauderdale County in fiscal year 2003.
On Wednesday, tourism bureau officials will hold a proclamation ceremony at the Mississippi Welcome Center in Toomsuba establishing the day as "Visit Meridian Day."
The public is invited to attend the noon ceremony. The guest speaker will be Tom van Hying, director of research for the Mississippi Development Authority. Local musician Britt Gully will provide entertainment.
On Wednesday, area restaurants such as Squealer's, Chick-fil-A, Barnhill's Country Buffet, Applebee's, Crescent City Grill, O'Charley's, Cracker Barrel, McAlisters Gourmet Deli and Luigi's will supply food at the Welcome Center for visitors and the public to enjoy.
Holifield said the goal of National Tourism Week is to remind people why tourism is important to Meridian and Lauderdale County.
