Three area baseball schools go into today's first-round baseball playoff tournament finals with decided advantages.
Northeast Lauderdale, West Lauderdale and Enterprise all head into today undefeated, meaning they will have to lose twice today in order not to advance to the second round.
While rain over the weekend has certainly threatened today's games, as of presstime, they were all still scheduled to be played.
Meridian High School heads to Olive Branch today to play the Conquistadors in a 4 p.m. game. Meridian lost Friday's first game of the best-of-three series 6-5. If MHS wins today at 4, then the two games would play a third game immediately following completion of the first one. The games can be heard locally on WZKR 103.3 FM.
While the 5A played a best-of-three format in the opening round, the other four classes went to a four-team, double-elimination tournament.
At Northeast Lauderdale, the Trojans play host to d'Iberville at 4 p.m. If NEL wins, it advances to the next round, if d'Iberville wins, then the two teams will play again at 7 p.m.
At Enterprise, the Bulldogs have moved their title game against Taylorsville back to 5 p.m. If Taylorsville beats EHS, then the two teams would play again at 8 p.m.
West Lauderdale is undefeated, but faces a little sterner test, as the Knights take on Greene County on the road. The host Greene County Wildcats and the Knights are set to play at 4 p.m. If Greene County wins, then the second game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Philadelphia has come out of the losers bracket to reach the finals at Lumberton in Class 2A play. The Tornadoes face Mercy Cross at 4 p.m., with the if-necessary game to follow.
