Enterprise blasts Wesson, reaches tournament finals

ENTERPRISE Saturday seemed a lot like Christmas morning for the Enterprise baseball team. Everything the Bulldogs wanted, they got, and then some.
Not only did the Bulldogs stay unbeaten in the Class 2A regional tournament that they're hosting, but Enterprise disposed of Wesson in just five innings in taking a 10-0 win.
"It was a big win right there," Enterprise head coach Jeremy Wilkins said. "It helped us out pitching-wise. (Wade) Weathers went out and pitched well and kept us in the game. He kept his pitch count down.
"And we hit the ball well. We hit it well last night and well today and that's helping us out a lot. It puts a lot of pressure on them to have to make plays and they made a couple of mistakes today.
"Hopefully, we can keep this thing going."
Enterprise will take on once-beaten Taylorsville for the tournament championship Monday at 4 p.m. with another game to follow if the Bulldogs lose the afternoon game.
Taylorsville pounded St. Andrew's 12-1 in Saturday's afternoon game, before winning the night contest 6-3 over Wesson.
Weathers upped his record to 12-1 with Saturday's shutout win, allowing only two hits, both of which were singles. The junior lefty struck out six and walked two. He finished with three consecutive whiffs.
Enterprise, 20-6, scored twice in the bottom of the second inning. Adam Simpson walked, stole second, and scored on a single by Dennis Watson. Scott Moseley's infield hit with two outs plated Watson.
The Bulldogs broke the game open with a five-run fifth frame. Simpson led off with a solo homer to left field.
After retiring the next batter, Wesson starter Nick Gunter (5-3) walked the next three batters before being lifted in favor of Corey Puckett.
"And then we followed those walks up with a couple of big hits," Wilkins said. "I had some guys to come through when we had runners in scoring position."
Lance Irby greeted the Cobra reliever with a two-run single to right field. Zeb Swain's fielder's choice put the Bulldogs up 6-0. Anthony Rawson added a sacrifice fly that scored Irby.
The Bulldogs added three more runs in the fifth to end the game with the run rule. Simpson reached on an error to start the inning. Chance Kidd singled one out later to make it 8-0. Following a walk to Justin Lee, Kidd scored on an error and a sacrifice fly by Irby scored Lee with the game-ending run.
Five different players each had one hit for Enterprise with Irby getting three RBIs.
Puckett and Wade Williams both had a single for the Cobras as they dropped to 14-8.
