ENTERPRISE Most fans came to the first round of the Class 2A tournament at Enterprise expecting to see junior left-handed pitcher Wade Weathers take to the mound for the game one start. Weathers did take the mound, but not until the fifth inning.
Weathers entered the game in the top of the fifth inning in relief to pitch 2.1 innings of hitless baseball to pace Enterprise to a 10-6 win over St. Andrew's on Friday night. The big question of the evening was why did Adam Simpson draw the start instead of Weathers?
The Bulldogs used the bats in a big way with 12 hits and five doubles to give the pitching staff plenty of run support.
Wesson defeated Taylorsville 4-0 in the double-elimination tournament's first game and advanced to today's winners bracket game at noon against Enterprise. The winner of that game moves to Monday's finals at 4 p.m.
The 3 p.m. game features Taylorsville and St. Andrew's at 3 p.m. in an elimination game. The winner of that game moves to the 7 p.m. contest against the loser of the noon game.
St. Andrew's (15-16) took an early lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly to center field by William Conway to make the score 1-0. Enterprise battled back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Lance Irby reached base on a fielder's choice and senior Zeb Swain followed with a towering two-run home run to left field to give the Bulldogs the one-run lead.
Enterprise extended the lead to 6-1 in the third inning in large part to three doubles in the inning. Irby led the inning off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Swain to make the score 3-1. Anthony Rawson followed with a walk and came around to score on a double by Weathers to increase the lead to 4-1. The next run of the inning scored on an RBI single by Simpson to give the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead.
The final run of the third inning scored on a double by Dennis Watson to give Enterprise a four-run lead.
The Saints fought back with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut the score to 6-3. The first run scored on an RBI single by Morgan Jones and the second run of the inning crossed the plate on a ground out.
St. Andrew's tied the game in the fifth inning with three runs and two hits to make the score 6-6. William Conway led off the inning with a single and scored on a throwing error by the Bulldogs to make the score 6-4. The Saints then cut the lead to one run on an sacrifice fly by David Marsh and later tied the game on a double by Morgan Jones.
The Bulldogs took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead by a score of 8-6. Rawson led the inning off with a walk and scored on a fielder's choice to make the score 7-6. The second run of the fifth inning scored on a single by Chance Kidd.
Enterprise (19-6) added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning to take a 10-6 lead over the Saints. Scott Mosley led off the inning with a double and scored on a double off the top of the wall by Swain to push the score to 9-6. The final run of the night scored on a single by Weathers.
Weathers collected four strikeouts and allowed no walks, while running his record to 11-1 on the season..
Wesson 4
Taylorsville 0
The Cobras kept the Taylorsville bats in check to take the shutout win. Wesson improved to 14-7 with the win and Taylorsville evened its record at 14-14 with the four-run loss.
Wesson had eight hits in the game and was led at the plate by Joseph Langum with a home run. Langum picked up the pitching win for the Cobras, going seven innings and allowing only three hits. Reid McDaniel was the losing pitcher for Taylorsville.
Wade Williams and Tyler Broom each added a double to round out the Cobra offense. Chase Jones was the only highlight for the Tartars with a double.
