West Lauderdale win 5-3A tourney

West Lauderdale bested seven other teams to win the Region 5-3A tennis tournament at Forest on Friday.
West finished with 11 points, while Newton County came in second with 10. Completing the tournament were Forest with five points, Raleigh with four, Morton with three, and Magee with two. Carthage and Richland did not win any matches.
West's Brook Bounds and Matt Schanrock won the mixed doubles, beating Newton County's Josh Cook and Maggie McDill 6-2, 6-0 in the finals. The top two teams in each category will advance to state. Bounds and Schanrock have lost only one match this spring.
Scott Truesdale won the boys' singles for West, knocking off Kennard Johnson of Newton County in a 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 marathon thriller.
Newton County's Lauren McDonald and Dru Anderson won the girls' doubles, beating West's Nancy Siefker and Lea Cook 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 in the finals.
In boys' doubles, Morton's James Harris and John Harris beat West's Eric Smith and Josh Sonak 6-0, 6-1 in the finals.

Meridian 10

The Wildcats scored four runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Hilltoppers in Friday's game at Louisville.
Tyler McMullen (6-3) got the win on the mound and went 3-for-5 at the plate as Meridian improved to 22-7. McMullen had a two-run double in the sixth inning uprising.
Kimone McDade had a solo homer for Meridian with Rodney Warren and Ken Mitts both getting a double.
Meridian ended the regular season with a 12-game winning streak. The Wildcats return to action Thursday at Olive Branch in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
Central Private 9-12
Lamar 0-2
The Raiders fell to 3-16 with the Academy AAA sweep at Baker, La.
In the opener, Kemp Mosley went 2-for-3 for Lamar. Brannon Harrison (1-3) took the loss.
In the second game, Drew Moffett and Randy Boyd Thompson both had a double for the Raiders. Jeremiah Lovett (0-5) took the loss.
Lamar returns to action Tuesday when Hillcrest Christian comes to town for a 6:30 p.m. contest.
Newton County 11
Clarkdale 8
Josh Pender had three hits, including a double and a triple, as the Cougars defeated the Bulldogs Friday at Decatur. Pender had three RBIs as Newton County improved to 14-15.
Both teams had 10 hits. Newton County commited only two errors, while Clarkdale had six miscues.
Josh Sheehan had a pair of doubles for the Cougars. Will Pearson stole three bases and scored three runs.
Jared Cavenaugh (8-4) got the win with four innings of relief. He struck out six, walked three, and allowed five hits.
Clarkdale got two singles and two RBIs from Michael Davis and two singles from Kurt Singley. Justin Mosley took the loss.
Newton County returns to action Monday at Taylorsville before taking on Greene County Friday at 7 p.m. at Greene County in first round Class 3A playoff action.
