Believe it or not, only six weeks remain for most leagues in the 2003-2004 Fall and Winter season, and it's time to turn our sights ahead for the summer. With that in mind, Dixie Bowl has released the 2004 Summer League schedule, slated to begin May 24. The 11-week season will consist of the Adult-Jr. and Senior Citizens on Monday, a four-person mixed league on Tuesday, the popular Trio league on Thursday and a four-person mixed league on Friday. The weekly four-game scratch sweeper will also return to its usual 8 p.m. slot on Mondays. New this year will be a No-Tap the first and third Wednesday of each month. For full details on this and other summer specials, pick up a schedule at Dixie Bowl. You may sign up for any league at the counter.
Reserved entries for the Men's State Tournament have now closed. You may still enter the tournament on a lanes-availability basis only. You will need to contact Jim Lacy at 601-582-8916 to place your entries or see if there are spots open for the dates and times you wish to bowl.
The Meridian YABA has announced plans for its annual awards banquet, which will take place April 24 at 10 a.m. at Bonita Lakes. Contact Jeff or Shirley Gaines for more details. The YABA would also like to thank all those who took part in last week's Mystery Doubles. All proceeds were placed into the YABA Scholarship Fund.
Big numbers boomed out from both the guys and the gals last week. Robby Relinski gave the crowd a thrill when he came up just two pins short of his first perfect game during action in the Hucklebuck league. Needless to say, his 298 was good enough for the high game of the week, and his 780 series to go along with it grabbed the high series as well. Barry Woods also came close with a 10-in-a-row 287 effort while pounding a 714. Tim Van Doren used games of 258 and 269 to bash out a 749, while Leon Fike used some good bowling to crack the 700 mark twice with a 706 and a 705. Ricky Nelson got into the high-scoring act with a 279 effort, and Jim Walker grabbed a 700 by the nose. Congratulations go out to Victor Brooks, who pounded out a 272 in the Monday Nighters effort. For his hard work, Victor will also receive the coveted Century Award for a 100-pins-over-average game. Other guys punching out big numbers included Jack Blythe, Dick Jentoft, Leslie McClinton, Greg Taylor, Ron Coleman, Herb Bruister, Jim Broderick, Jr. Kenny Mattson, and M.A. Copeland.
Congratulations also go out to Sue Kirkpatrick after she showed both the men and the women how it's done by recording strikes while on her way to a career-high 268 game in the Ball and Chain league. Sue also added a 222 game later in the week. Janie Tisdale took high-series honors with a 236/644 effort, and Shelia Dearman scattered wood for a nice 247 game. Other gals mixing it up included Debbie Jones (224, 231), Judy Bounds (224), Matar McClinton (226), Rhonda Covington (234), Denise Rutledge (223, Dot Vance (229) and Kate Grant (246).
Until next week, good luck and good bowling.
