Lady Wildcats take first division victory

Meridian scored twice in the top of the fifth inning and thwarted a Lady Cougar rally in the bottom of the seventh to take a 2-1 Region 4-5A victory at Northwest Rankin Thursday.
Meridian improved to 12-7 overall and 1-2 in region play.
Brandi Limerick was the winning pitcher for the Lady Wildcats, tossing a four-hitter. Artesian Boyd led Meridian at the plate with two of the Lady Wildcats' three hits.
Clarkdale 3
Demopolis, Ala. 2
The Lady Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to knock off the defending Alabama Class 4A state champions.
Kimbo Seale singled with one out to tie the game at 2-2. After Seale stole third base, Savannah Satcher followed with a two-out single to drive in the game-winning run.
Emily Howard (12-2) got the win, allowing five hits and striking out seven as Clarkdale improved to 16-3.
After Demopolis tallied once in the top of the third, both teams got a single run in the fourth frame.
Union 11
Enterprise 0
Union remained unbeaten in Region 6-1A/2A with a five-inning blanking of the Bulldogs at Union.
Lindsay Walker (9-3) tossed a one-hitter over four innings to get the win. She struck out five and walked three.
Lauren White had a single and a three-run homer for the Lady Jackets as they improved to 11-6 overall and 4-0 in league play. Beth Crotwell had a triple and a pair of RBIs, while Morgan Milling and Tiffany Thomas both had three singles.
Southeast Lauderdale 17
Raleigh 2
Lindsey Raines pitched a no-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead the Lady Tigers past the Lady Lions in the Region 5-3A game.
Raines and Lindsey Graham were leading hitters for Southeast, both going 2-4.
Southeast's game with Choctaw today has been canceled and will not be rescheduled.
PREP BASEBALL
Northeast Lauderdale 10
Lake 0
The Trojans improved to 14-4 with the win over the Hornets.
Chad Brunson went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, and a homer. He drove in five runs. Cory Chance went 3-for-3 with a double.
Nathan Peden (3-1) got the win. Three Northeast pitchers combined to strike out nine batters.
PREP GOLF
South Jones won the Northeast Jones Invitational Golf Tournament, which was held Thursday at Dixie Golf Club in Laurel. The Braves had a 322, led by Jason Freeman's 77 and Zach Welch's 79.
Laurel was second with a 336. Lance Risher's 77 led the Tornadoes.
Northeast Jones and Wayne County tied for third at 364. Ben Gandy shot an 86 and Noel Gandy had an 87 to lead the War Eagles. Stephen Voyles led the Tigers with an 87.
Northeast Lauderdale had only three golfers. Matt Davison led the Trojans with an 82. Jake Feltman shot a 91 and Corey Connell had a 102.
JUCO BASEBALL
East Central 13-4
Holmes 3-6
The Warriors took a split against MACJC Central Division foe Holmes on Wednesday afternoon at Goodman. In game one, East Central pounded out 14 hits and got a great pitching performance from Jim Talley to take the 10-run win.
Marcus Davis and Mario Thomas led the Warriors at the plate.
East Central dropped game two as Holmes scored four runs in the final inning to take the win. Corey Coward and Brent McMillian led the offense with a pair of singles.
ECCC improved to 1-3 in the Central Division.
Ryan Sullivan got the complete game win for Holmes.
The Bulldogs improved to 19-5 on the season and 2-4 in the Central Division.
Jones 2-0
Gulf Coast 4-5
The Bobcats dropped another pair of MACJC South Division games and fell to 10-21 for the season. Elliot Burch led Jones with a double in game one as the Bobcats were held to only three hits.
Jones only managed five hits in game two and Joey Mooney took the loss on the mound. Mooney also led Jones at the plate with a pair of singles.
JUCO GOLF
The Meridian Community College golf team finished fourth in the Rush-Redgate Spring Invitational at Ponta Creek Golf Course on Sunday with a team score of 319.
Winston Powell led the Eagles with a score of 79, while Joel Myrick, Smitty Smith, and Clay Jarrell each shot an 80.
MCC finished second in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Invitational on Monday as four Eagles shot a 77. The Eagles ended the day with a team score of 308. Myrick, Jarrell, Chad Hopkins, and Powell each scored a 77.
The Eagles ended their week with a second-place finish in the Jones Invitational with a team score of 295 on Tuesday. Matthew Smith took the overall medalist honor with a low score of 68.
