Lawmakers tackle state budget

Mississippi legislators are well on their way to crafting the state budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1 but don't expect to see anything final until late April or early May.
One thing, however, appears certain: Money is tight and several state agencies from the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks to the Department of Human Services could see substantial spending cuts.
State Rep. Cecil Brown, D-Jackson, put everything in perspective while discussing the budget on the House floor. Brown is a member of the Joint Legislative Budget Committee, which helps craft a proposed spending plan.
