Clarkdale and Union both finished a win away from taking their pool championships on Saturday in the 2004 Spring Fling at Northeast Park.
Union, which won both its games on Friday, began Saturday with a 9-6 win over Hale County but lost 10-2 to Eupora. Eupora also finished with a 3-1 record for the weekend, but took the Pool 3 championship with the head-to-head victory over Union.
Clarkdale, which was 1-1 on Friday, took a 2-1 win over Kosciusko and a 4-3 victory against Moss Point. At 3-1, the Lady Bulldogs finished in a tie for second place with Gautier.
Clarkdale
The host Lady Bulldogs took two tight one-run wins on Saturday 2-1 against Kosciusko and 4-3 over Moss Point.
Clarkdale never trailed Kosciusko but held the slim, decisive lead for most of the game. Kimbo Seale put the Lady Bulldogs up 1-0 with a run in the first inning, but Kosciusko countered with its only run of the game in the same inning.
Brandi Wright, who finished 1-of-3 from the plate, came through for Clarkdale in the second inning. Emily Howard was 2-for-3 in the game.
Whitney Drachenberg had a 2-for-3 outing of her own against Moss Point. With the score tied 2-2 in the fifth inning, Seale and Savannah Satcher crossed home to give the Lady Bulldogs a two-run lead.
Moss Point plated one run in the sixth inning, but the potential tying run was thrown out while trying to advance to third on the scoring play.
Union
Union fell 10-2 to Eupora on Saturday night in the decisive game in Pool 3 after beating Hale County 9-6 earlier in the day.
Loren Kennedy, Morgan Breland and Chasity Yates each went 2-for-3 against Hale County, and Deann Cleveland was 3-for-5 from the plate. Kennedy and Breland scored two runs apiece.
Later in the day, Eupora jumped out to a 7-0 lead over Union after just two innings. Kennedy, who finished the game 2-for-3, and Yates scored the Lady Yellowjackets' runs in the third inning.
Neshoba Central
Neshoba Central lost both its Saturday games at the Spring Fling after splitting its two contests on Friday.
The Lady Rockets were edged out 2-1 by Demopolis in their first game of the day, then beaten 10-0 by Southaven.
Samantha Giambrone scored Neshoba Central's only run in the second inning against Demopolis, which got both of its runs in the first inning. Sarah Williamson, Allison McDaniel and Jessie Nowell each went 1-for-3 against Demopolis.
Southaven jumped out to a quick lead against the Lady Rockets with four runs in the first inning, three in the second and three more in the fourth. The game was stopped after the fourth inning.
Nowell was 1-for-2 against Southaven, accounting for the Lady Rockets' only hit of the game.
Enterprise
Enterprise lost 7-2 to Kossuth in its first game of the day and fell 8-6 to DeSoto Central later on Saturday.
Kacey Jimmerson led the Lady Bulldogs with a 2-for-3 outing against Kossuth, while Morgan Swancey and Jill Mollett each were 1-for-2.
Swancey and Brittany Speed accounted for Enterprise's two runs.
In the second game, the Lady Bulldogs piled on six runs in the fifth inning, coming up just short against DeSoto Central after trailing 8-0 earlier in the game.
Jimmerson and Speed were both 2-for-3 against DeSoto Central, and Amanda Parker was 1-for-3 with a triple.
Enterprise was 0-4 in the Spring Fling, finishing behind Pool 3 champ Eupora.
Newton County
Newton County lost both its Saturday games at the Spring Fling, falling to Pascagoula 8-3 and to Caledonia 2-1.
Lindsey Little, Dominique Mapp and Jennifer Smith scored the Lady Cougars' runs against Pascagoula, the eventual Pool 4 champion. Smith led Newton County with a 2-for-3 outing, and Little was 1-for-3.
Newton County led 1-0 briefly against Caledonia after Little came home in the top of the third inning, but Caledonia countered with a run in the bottom of the third and another in the fourth.
Kristin Pillsbury was 1-for-3 for Newton County, as was Mapp.
