What is so uncommon about a group of four young college girls attending an elite women's college in the 1970s?
Wendy Wasserstein tells us in her play, "Uncommon Women and Others." The UWA Theater production will be staged tonight through Saturday in Bibb Graves Auditorium on the University of West Alabama campus in Livingston.
Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. each night.
Wasserstein sets her play, which is written from the perspective of these four college coeds, at her own alma mater of Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts.
The story begins at a reunion of the friends and former classmates.
The playwright expresses her interest in feminist dramatic literature with "Uncommon Women and Others" as she details the goals, desires and aspirations of each character from her days at Mt. Holyoke until years after graduation.
Like most of Wasserstein's work, "Uncommon Women and Others" takes place during the time when women's movements were causing women to take a second look at their lives and roles in society and at home.
