Lady Tornadoes score victory

The Philadelphia Lady Tornadoes broke away from Lloyd Star in the second quarter and held on a 69-55 victory in the second round of the Girls Class 2A South State Tournament played at Perry Central in New Augusta on Thursday night.
With the score tied at 12 after the first quarter, the Lady Tornadoes outscored Lloyd Star 21-7 in the second period, and that basically decided the game. Both teams scored 36 points in the second half as Philadelphia moves into the semifinal round against Bay Springs.
Dominetrix Hunter scored 24 points to lead the Lady Tornadoes while Ashley Lowery scored 15.
In other games played in the Girls 2A South State Tournament, host Perry Central upped its record to 33-1 with a 55-45 win over Heidelberg High School, while the Bay Springs girls defeated Williams-Sullivan 67-51.
Perry Central 55
Heidelberg 45
The Perry Central girls overcame an eight-point deficit with about five minutes left to defeat Heidelberg High School and advance to the semifinals of the tournament.
Heidelberg led 27-25 at the half and outscored Perry Central 10-6 in the third quarter to take a 37-31 edge into the final quarter. The Perry Central girls then exploded for 24 fourth quarter points while limiting the Lady Oilers to eight.
Shawanda Stevens scored 20 points to lead Heidelberg. Perry Central had three girls in double figures, led by Demara Bolton with 19, Chinita Steele with 14 and Flallon Hartfield with 13.
The Lady Oilers close the season with a 21-8 record.
Bay Springs 67
Williams-Sullivan 51
Jasmaine Payne scored 18 points and NaDasha Strickland added 17 to lead the Bay Springs girls over Williams-Sullivan.
The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 17-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Bay Springs added to its lead in the second quarter and held a 36-26 edge at the intermission. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Williams-Sullivan 31-25 in the second half.
Two games are set for today in the semifinals of the tournament. Perry Central takes on St. Andrews at 6 p.m. and Bay Springs plays Philadelphia at 7:30 p.m.
Boys 4A South State
Jim Hill 63
Quitman 53
The 2003-2004 basketball season came to an end for the Quitman High School boys Thursday as they dropped a 63-53 decision to Jim Hill of Jackson in the second round of the South State 4A Tournament at George County High School in Lucedale.
Jim Hill, which led 11-6 after the first quarter, outpointed the Panthers 20-10 during the second quarter to lead 31-16 at the break. The Panthers outscored Jim Hill 11-9 during the third quarter and trailed 40-27 going into the final quarter. Quitman outscored the Tigers 26-21 during the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough.
Interestingly, Jim Hill connected on 18-of-25 free throws, while the Panthers only shot one free throw during the entire game. The Tigers improve their record to 24-7.
Daniel Boyd led Quitman with 18 points while Brett Jones notched 15 and Prince Trotter scored eight. Quitman finished the season with a 23-12 record.
Boys Class 1A
South State
Puckett 74
Union 38
It was all Puckett from the start of the Wolves win over the Yellowjackets in the Boys Class 1A South State Tournament which is being held at McAdams High School. The Wolves led 20-8 at the end of the first quarter and outscored the Yellowjackets 22-10 during the second quarter to post a 42-12 lead at halftime. Union was limited to two points in the third quarter as the Wolves cruised to victory.
Union ends the season with a 13-19 record while Puckett improves to 19-7.
Anthony Johnson's 12 points led the Union effort. Puckett's Armundo Robinson was the game's leading scorer with 25.
Durant 89
Scott Central 62
Durant jumped out to a 46-29 halftime lead and cruised on to victory.
Eddie Patrick scored 18 points to lead the Bobcats while Terrance Simmons scored 24 points to pace Durant. Scott Central closes the season with a 27-8 record while Durant improves to 25-5.
