Excellence in Education

March 11, 2004
On Feb. 21, Northwest Junior High School's Mathcounts team including Cedric Reid, Patrick May, Ayesha Hicks and Ashley Betts placed first in district competition.
The competition took place at East Central Community College.
In individual competition, Cedric Reid placed first, Patrick May placed second and Ayesha Hicks placed ninth. These students will advance to the state competition, which will be May 20 in Jackson.
Blake Olmsted has been named as a Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition Student, for STAR Student, for the 2003-2004 school year by the Mississippi Economic Council's M.B. Swayze Educational Foundation.
The Lamar School senior will be honored during the 14th Annual Education Celebration on April 23 at Mississippi College in Clinton. The event is co-sponsored by Entergy Mississippi.
STAR Students are selected on the basis of academic excellence. Both American College Test scores and scholastic averages are compared to determine the school's STAR Student.
Each STAR Student is asked to designate a STAR Teacher, the classroom teacher who has made the greatest contribution to the student's scholastic achievement.
Phyllis P. Skipper was named STAR Teacher.
Nearly 500 STAR Students and STAR Teachers will receive recognition from MEC's Swayze Foundation at the celebration. The top 20 STAR students, the ALL-STAR scholars, and the STAR teachers will be presented scholarship awards provided by the Kelly Gene Cook Sr. Charitable Foundation.
The highlight of the education celebration will be the naming of the Mississippi STAR Student for 2004, winner of the coveted $24,000 Cook Foundation Scholarship.
