Hobert Kornegay Drive designated

By Staff
Feb.29,2004
A city street got a new name Saturday as 39th Avenue was officially re-named Hobert Kornegay Drive in honor of a national pioneer in civil rights.
Dr. Hobert Kornegay, a longtime Meridian dentist, was the first African American elected official in Lauderdale County and served admirably on the Meridian City Council for 12 years and on the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors for three years. His service was marked by a deep commitment to justice and fairness, along with a common touch that embraced all of his constituents.
It is fitting that during February, which is Black History Month, his memory is further preserved by the re-naming of 39th Avenue in his honor. We join with his many admirers in saluting this well-deserved recognition.
