A MOST difficult bill

By Staff
Feb.8,2004
Mayors, aldermen and city council members from across the state have been lobbying legislators to pass MOST the Mississippi Optional Sales Tax, according to The Associated Press. The bill would let local entities hold elections on raising local sales taxes for specific projects.
All this comes after most lawmakers campaigned last year on pledges of no new taxes. MOST would be a new tax.
So, Rep. John Mayo, a Democrat from Clarksdale, was heckled a bit when he stood on the House floor to announce that he had the MOST bill at his desk if any member wanted to come by and sign on as an author.
There were several boos some good-natured, some perhaps not.
Thank you for your encouragement,'' Mayo, D-Clarksdale, said with a smile, AP reported.
There was no line at Mayo's desk, but he had hustled around the chamber earlier to find 20 co-sponsors.
