Time to go positive'

By Staff
October 26, 2003
As the final full week of campaigning begins and Mississippi voters prepare to make their decisions, we have one suggestion for all candidates: Tell us definitely what you will do, if elected, to improve the quality of our lives.
With all of the negative attack ads, Election 2003 has proven to be a rough ride. Ludicrous allegations have been raised, especially in the campaigns for governor and lieutenant governor, allegations that surely test our passion for freedom of speech. This election season is a reminder that, at least in political advertising, freedom of speech does not necessarily involve the truth. Voters are left to sift through the rhetorical flotsam.
Candidates have been beaten about the head with the deadly weapons of innuendo, political spin and outright falsehoods. It's been down and dirty and our guess is that voters have had just about enough.
Over the next eight days before election day, candidates have a real opportunity. They have the freedom to "go positive," detailing their plans for how they would govern if elected.
Candidates who do this just might be pleasantly surprised at how voters respond on Nov. 4.
