Bowlers notch big numbers

By Staff
October 14, 2003
Was it something in the water? Changes in the weather? Or maybe it was the full moon last week that helped produce the biggest scoring week of the season to date. The column week – Thursday through Wednesday – ended with three ladies cranking out games over 250 and 10 different guys blasting eleven 700 Series. Five of those 11 came in the most improbable of places, that being in the 18-team Wednesday Mixed league.
I'll get back to that in a moment, but first let's look at how the ladies fared. As I said, three ladies produced games over 250 including Shirley Gaines who used the high game of the week, a 267, to help blast out a whopping 689 series. Janie Tisdale posted a 256 while on her way to a 626 and Mary Copeland strung out strikes to chalk up a fine 259 game. Mona McGrane reeled off a 237 while Jane Gibson tallied up both a 225 and a 223. Also stepping up to the 225 mark was Nonie Embrey. Matar McClinton posted a 228 and a 224 while Sue Kirkpatrick came in with a 224. Rounding out the top scorers were Dana Carson at 223 and Karen Mattson with a 221.
Turning back to the guys, Robert Brown started off the festivities in the Queen City league with a 277/739 effort and Shayne Barfield posted a 276/710. Tyrone McAlpine claimed the high series for the week with a 743 and also boomed out a 724. Keith Fike got on the board for the first time this season with a 725 and Rodney Bounds squeaked in with a 701. Also making the board for the first time this season were Ryan Relinski at 740 and Greg Taylor who landed a 715 set. Congratulations and a hearty slap on the back go out to my Wednesday night teammate Joe Hasson who used games of 255 and 267 to post his first career 700 with a 704. Despite a bad back, Joe has been grinding it out for years and it was a real pleasure to be there and watch him as he reached this milestone. Rounding out the board was Tim Van Doren's 725. Other guys posting games of 250 or better were Robert Buford, Tommie Gaines, Mike Holcomb, Clark Ramsey, Barry Woods, Don McWilliams, Mike Cothern, Bill Fike and Brian Mattox.
On the junior circuit, Josh Coleman had a big week posting a 262/670 in a pre-bowl for the Saturday Major-Seniors and a 212/608 in the Wednesday Fun Time league. Adam Carson cranked out a 247 game while posting his first ever 600 series with a 603. Albert Edmonds strutted his stuff with a 189, 217/531. Also scoring big was Tyler Davis who cranked out a 208. Randi Allen led the girls with a nice 187 game and a 474 series. In the Dixie Preps, high honors went to Jerry Dearman and Emily Davis.
Be sure to check the tournament board for the latest entries into the various tournaments coming up. Until next week. . . Good luck and good bowling.
