Vote Tuesday

By Staff
August 3,2003
One of the quietest primary election campaigns in recent memory comes to an end on Tuesday as Mississippi voters choose party candidates who will be on the November ballot. Only in the last few days particularly at the Neshoba County Fair have statewide candidates come out swinging. Look for a real slugfest between Gov. Ronnie Musgrove and Republican Haley Barbour through the rest of summer and into the fall.
On the local scene, candidates are also wrapping up their campaigns. In one of the most interesting matchups Lauderdale County District 1 supervisor five Republicans are vying for the position being vacated by Hank Florey, the retiring incumbent. Many observers predict that a runoff will be necessary between Tuesday's top voter getters in this race, a runoff that would be held on Aug. 26. Whoever emerges as the winner will win the seat as there is no Democratic opposition. This is only one of many important races as voters choose their county, legislative and state leaders for the next four years. Regardless of political party affiliation, The Meridian Star today encourages registered voters to exercise their right to cast a ballot on Tuesday. It is a fundamental obligation in a free society.
