The first full weekend of the State Games of Mississippi went into the books Sunday with the completion of archery competition at Bonita Lakes and youth soccer at Jaycee and Northeast Parks.
The State Games command central post at Meridian Community College was a serene area. April Luke, State Games executive director, and Leah Reed, public relations coordinator, were surrounded by children, family and a few hard-working volunteers.
Ten sports were on tap last weekend, including youth soccer, which arguably brings in the largest crowd of participants to the Meridian-based State Games.
Archery, two-man volleyball, adult basketball, water-skiing, youth softball, table tennis, powerlifting, stickball and track and field also concluded successful competitions.
The most pleasing thing for Luke and Reed was the weather.
Reed agreed.
The State Games staff relies heavily on event commissioners to run their respective events.
