Relay for Life another success story for area

By Staff
June 15, 2003
The American Cancer Society's ninth annual Relay for Life in Lauderdale County proved again the power of an idea. Braving rain, thousands of people turned out at Meridian High School's Ray Stadium to demonstrate their support for cancer research.
Collectively, the Relay for Life teams in Lauderdale County raised more than $335,000 through a variety of projects. And, once again, Relay for Life has proven to be the area's most successful fund-raiser.
Perhaps this is because the menace of cancer has touched so many families, affected so many lives. So many of us have a personal experience with this disease that raising money for research into finding a cure seems perfectly natural.
We salute cancer survivors who led the first march around the Ray Stadium track just as we mourn the loss of so many lives over the years to cancer. We also pause today in tribute to the generous people in our area who gave of their time and money in this wonderful cause.
