A grocery store owner tried to thwart an armed robber Thursday, fighting with the knife-wielding suspect for several minutes before he fled the scene with the cash register in his hands.
Lauderdale County Sheriff's deputies are investigating the armed robbery, which took place shortly after 5:30 p.m. at Brown Grocery store in Northwest Lauderdale County.
Maj. Ward Calhoun with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department said the suspect and the store's owner were involved in a "brief confrontation."
Calhoun said the suspect is a white man in his mid 20s. He said the suspect fled in a late-1980s model, white, four-door car, headed south on Highway 19 South.
