Athletes arrive for State Games

More than 2,000 athletes from across the state will participate in the state Games of Mississippi opening ceremonies tonight under the lights of Meridian High School's Ray Stadium.
State Games organizers say things are on track for two straight weekends of sporting frenzy.
Luke said the financial impact of the games on Meridian is significant. In 1998, financial contributions to the community were estimated at $3.8 million; a 2002 study saw the total rise to $5.5 million.
The 12th annual Olympic-style event is expected to attract more than 10,000 visitors, including 5,000 athletes. The athletes will compete in 28 amateur athletic events.
This weekend's events include archery, basketball, adult power lifting, youth soccer, softball, stickball, table tennis, track and field, volleyball, water skiing and high school baseball.
Luke said her office works year-round to recruit sponsors for the event.
She added that the event is a success because of the hundreds of volunteers and the people who serve as commissioners for each event. For more information, call the State Games office at 482-0205.
