The final ball has been rolled, the last pin fallen and the curtain has closed on the 43rd Annual MWBA State Tournament. It was seven weeks of big scores, seven weeks of fun and seven weeks of hard work by a lot of people, most notably our local WBA association ladies.
Several times in the last two months I have mentioned Mary Formby and Jane Gibson, primarily because it was these two ladies who were in charge of making things go. But there were many other ladies who also worked long, hard hours in making this tournament a success. I know if I start trying to list everyone involved I will leave someone out, so I am not even going to try. Let me just say a big "Thank You" to each and every one of you for a job well done. All of your efforts are greatly appreciated and you are to be commended for showing everyone which city has the best association in the state.
Also, a big hand goes out to the staff at Dixie Bowl who went out of their way to do their part in insuring a successful tournament. Your willingness to work extra when needed and your efforts did not go unnoticed.
Congratulations to Jim Broderick, Jr. who came up big in the Summer Trio league last week. As most of you already know, Jim is already the author of the local highest scratch series in league play with an 837. Last week, he became the first bowler in the city to record his second "8" when he pounded out games of 278, 279 and 246 for a big 803. Not bad for a guy just five months off knee surgery! Congratulations again, Jim. Keep up the good work!
Don't forget the State Games of Mississippi bowling competition is slated for next weekend, June 28-29. The entry fee is $16 for adults and $14 for youth bowlers. All bowling is scratch within six different average divisions.
This means if your average is 145, you won't be competing against someone with a 200 average. Also, you will compete only against members of the same sex. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in each division and each sex.
You may contact Shayne or Lisa Barfield or turn them in at the counter at Dixie Bowl. Shift times will be 10 a.m.,1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday and 12 noon and 2 p.m. Sunday. Medals will be awarded immediately after the conclusion of the final set. There will also be a special shift Friday night at 7 p.m. for those who can't make the regular weekend shifts. There is a place and a time for everyone, so we hope to see you there.
Finally, we extend our sympathies and prayers to Meridian bowler Jo Wagner following the death of her daughter, Sandra Lynn Troutman, last week.
