The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department made many arrests as a result of its roadside safety checks that included the Memorial Day weekend.
The safety campaign, called "Buckle Up Mississippi, It's the Law and It's Enforced," was held May 19-30 at 14 roadside check points. Deputies who worked the checkpoints were paid by a grant from the state.
Maj. Ward Calhoun of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department said plans are in place for increased patrols and safety checkpoints throughout the county again during the Fourth of July holiday.
During the safety campaign Lauderdale County deputies checked 1,009 vehicles that led to 28 seat belt violations, 17 child restraint violations, 12 drug arrests, 27 DUI arrests, four felony arrests, 16 arrests on outstanding warrants and 77 other citations, including driving with a suspended license or with expired tags or and expired driver's license.
