Someone once told Becky Vance that if quarters were laid end-to-end around the track at Meridian High School's Ray Stadium, it would add up to $10,000.
She wanted to see it for herself.
Vance, this year's Lauderdale County Relay for Life chairperson, set aside Friday as Quarter Day for all public, private and home-schooled children.
Vance said there are about 15,000 students in public and private schools within the county and that the Quarter Day project fits well with this year's Relay for Life theme: Embrace the Challenge, Celebrate the Future.
This is the ninth year for Relay for Life in Lauderdale County. The overnight event honors cancer survivors, creates awareness and educates the public about cancer-related issues, and raises funds for cancer research.
The Lauderdale County Relay for Life campaign raised more than $395,000 last year for the American Cancer Society.
